In 2014, Walker Methodist became a premier partner with the MUSIC & MEMORY℠ program in Minnesota in an effort to bring music into our senior living communities. MUSIC & MEMORY℠ is a non-profit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, which can vastly improve quality of life. Beloved music has the power to calm forms of chaotic brain activity and helps the listener to live in the present moment, often empowering them to reconnect with others around them and feel more like themselves. Those suffering with dementia, Parkinson’s, and other diseases that alter and damage the brain’s chemistry are often able to reconnect to the world around them during and after listening to their favorite music. Music has also been linked with slowing memory loss, increasing recognition and recollection, and improving the lifestyles of residents using the music program.
